Personality disorders in the Australian context: a workshop for international medical graduate psychiatrists

This workshop has been developed to update psychiatrists and psychiatrists in training who have graduated in situations where personality disorders are not a strong presence in their caseloads. The Australian structures, models and legal environment may have differences that can be difficult to negotiate.

Content:

  • Diagnostic difficulties and dilemmas - what to look for, at what stage
  • Course and outcomes - there is hope
  • Pharmacotherapy - what might work for who
  • Common problem areas - suicidality, self-harm, difficulty in engaging with treatment providers
  • Psycholological treatments - what works for who
  • Supporting and managing team work - some concepts for managing the system within the chaos that sometimes ensues
  • Planning - a good plan goes a long way
  • Medico-legal environment - what is helpful to document in complex situations

Examples and cases will be presented throughout.

There will be a maximum of 30 participants.

Venue: Mindful Centre, Flemington

Cost: $220 for clinicians from Victorian Area Mental Health Services,

         $330 for clinicians from all other services.
