BPD and AOD

Some people with borderline personality disorder (BPD) can also struggle with alcohol and other drug (AOD) use.

Many people with borderline personality disorder (BPD) can also struggle with alcohol and other drug (AOD) use. These substances are often used as a way to self-medicate or temporarily escape overwhelming emotions like anger, shame, or emptiness. A dual diagnosis often refers to someone experiencing a mental illness and substance use.

Unfortunately, the use of substances may increase impulsive behaviour, exacerbate mood swings, and make it harder to stick with therapy or maintain relationships. It can also increase the risk of self-harm or suicidal behaviour.

Treatment for BPD and AOD use needs to be integrated-meaning both conditions are treated at the same time. Support often includes therapy focused on emotional regulation and sometimes medication to reduce cravings or stabilise mood.
