Good Psychiatric Management (GPM)

What is the Good Psychiatric Management (GPM) model of care?

Tue, July 01

Good Psychiatric Management (GPM) is an elegant, evidence-based treatment for borderline personality disorder. It is a principle based approach that is highly flexible and effective. GPM does not require extensive training and most mental health clinicians can deliver it in most clinical settings.

It does not demand clinicians to have prior psychotherapy training, and it comes naturally to most psychiatrists with some degree of training. It has been reported to be as clinically effective as Dialectical Behaviour Therapy.

Spectrum recognises GPM as an ideal treatment approach for Australian public mental health settings and as such has recommended GPM as a preferred Model of Care for Victorian Area Mental Health & Wellbeing Services.

Recently staff, including our Executive Clinical Director, Sathya Rao, delivered a number of workshops on GPM in Australia and India with positive feedback around the model of care.
