General Psychiatric Management (GPM) Training: A Step Forward

Spectrum recently partnered with the Western Australia Country Health Service (WACHS) South West region to deliver a comprehensive General Psychiatric Management (GPM) workshop, tailored for acute inpatient care. 

These sessions successfully engaged around 50 participants, including inpatient mental health nurses, consultation liaison nurses and emergency department staff from district sites.

The training focused on enhancing understanding and skills in working with people with borderline personality disorder (BPD), covering areas such as suicidality, trauma impact, therapeutic relationships, risk formulation, emotion co-regulation strategies, effective communication and recovery pathways. The training including lived experience perspectives (both carer and consumer).

This training, based on the evidence-based GPM model for BPD, covered such areas as:

  • Development, prevalence and recovery of BPD
  • Foundational principles of GPM:
  • Risk formulation for BPD
  • Principles of Co-regulation
  • Self-awareness
