Spectrum is excited to announce the gradual integration of Good Psychiatric Management (GPM) within our model of care. Recognised for its flexibility, accessibility, and evidence-based effectiveness, GPM aligns with our mission to enhance early intervention, boost service capacity, and ultimately improve outcomes for people with borderline personality disorder (BPD).
At this early stage, the integration of GPM will be introduced as a foundational intervention.
Embedding GPM within this foundational layer allows us to rigorously pilot its core components while ensuring strategies are firmly aligned with Spectrum’s principles of trauma-informed, evidence-based, and capacity-building practice.
Spectrum's path forward
Spectrum will use GPM as an additional Model of Care across the Victorian public mental health services, integrating it gradually into our service framework.
Throughout the year, our staff will continue to run a number of workshops covering core GPM components such as risk formulation, co-regulation strategies, trauma-informed care, and the importance of lived experience perspectives.
Why GPM matters for Spectrum and the broader community
- Enhanced service capacity
By streamlining our work and implementing and introducing this as a foundational intervention, we will be able to reach more individuals in need, sooner. - Improved outcomes
Both research and implementation suggest that structured yet flexible support like GPM can substantially improve symptoms and functional recovery. - Early intervention
By equipping providers to address BPD earlier and more effectively, GPM can reduce crisis escalation and the need for intensive interventions.
Looking ahead
Over the coming months, Spectrum will:
- Continue delivering training sessions across regions, including that of MBT, DBT, Complex and GPM.
- Look at ways of integrating GPM practices into our standard care pathways, introduced as a foundational intervention
- Expand access to resources—including practical guides
- Measure outcomes to ensure ongoing effectiveness and quality of care.
- Preserve our MBT, DBT, and Complex Care as is.
Why additional services?
Spectrum wants to better serve our clients and their family/carers.
To complement the vision and outcomes set as part of our new Future Directions Plan launched in 2024 and to keep up with scientific developments, we will continue to look at ways to align us with the needs of our stakeholders and the requirements of the Department of Health.
