On World Suicide Prevention Day (10 September), it’s vital to recognise the gravity behind the headline: 10% of people diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) will die by suicide. Spectrum works to shift outcomes—from repeated crisis to sustained recovery; from isolation to connection; from stigma to understanding.
Sufferers of BPD have the highest suicide rate of any demographic
Sufferers of borderline personality disorder (BPD) have the highest suicide rate of any demographic. Unfortunately, 1 in 10 people with this condition die by suicide and 7 in 10 make an attempt.
Did you see the research: “Coroners’ investigations of suicide in Australia: The hidden toll of borderline personality disorder” (Journal of Psychiatric Research, 2020)? Published a few years ago, this study continues to offer powerful insights into the intersection of mental illness and suicide in Australia.
The researchers, including Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor Jillian Broadbear of Spectrum, used the Victorian Suicide Register (VSR) to identify all suspected and confirmed suicides in Victoria from 2009 to 2013 in which there was evidence of a diagnosis—or suspicion—of borderline personality disorder (BPD).

At Spectrum, we are committed to changing these statistics. Our mission is to empower and build the skills and confidence of healthcare professionals to effectively support individuals with personality disorders, particularly BPD.
BPD is a treatable condition. Psychological therapy is effective in improving outcomes. Many patients with BPD have lived with chronic suicidality for several years can recover from it when BPD goes into remission.
